Baking More Nowadays? Me too, but not just for our Humans.
Covid-19? Yeah, we’re home. Yeah, we’re limiting our trips to the grocery and cooking more. Which means sometimes we have to get creative because we don’t have all the ingredients needed for a certain dish that comes to mind. I’m also determined to get to the bottom of our freezer and to the back of our pantry using up all our forgotten frozen and canned food. So while cooking and blending things — using up those opened bags of frozen spinach and several bags of frozen fruit, I remembered one of my favorite dog treat recipes. Why does frozen fruit and spinach remind me of dog treats? I have no freaking clue; it’s just what happened, OK? And if you’re like us, when you cook more it immediately correlates to eating more. So then, I get to thinking, here’s a great idea; instead of baking for me or us, I’ll bake something delicious for our dogs or the neighbor’s dogs or our local animal shelter. What a great way to spend covid-19 quarantine time and an even better way to love on our pets or other pets.
Over the years we’ve given all our favorite canine friends these dog treats as Christmas gifts and they’re always all the rage. I usually plug it as a simple Advent activity to do with your kids, but since we’re all stuck at home and we all seem to be cooking and baking more than than usual, why not make a big batch and share them with the neighborhood canines??!! Your dog will thank you.

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (I had to use regular)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter (no sugar)
1 cup of water
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg
A lot of LOVE
*some dogs are allergic to flour/wheat and you can use rice flour of coconut flour as a replacement —-the consistency might change a bit.
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350°
In a large bowl combine flour, banking powder, and the egg. Add peanut butter, water, honey and stir until you have stiff dough. The dough becomes very firm and sticky. You may need to use your hands, or the paddle attachment on your mixer.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about 1/2 inch thick and use the cookie cutter to make fun shapes. The treats barely spread and rise, so get creative with your shapes and place as many as you can fit on one cookie sheet.
Bake for about 15-17 minutes or until golden.
Keep in an airtight container for 7-10 days. OK to freeze.
